Learner Agency

At Ferguson Intermediate school, learner agency is promoted using Project - Based Learning as a learning tool to enable learners to think critically, evaluate information and communicate well.  This is a 'student driven and teacher facilitated approach' (Bell, 2010) driven through inquiry learning.

"Students are given explicit instruction in learning strategies (such as goal setting, self-monitoring and deliberate practice) that enable them to take control of their learning, develop meta-cognitive skills, self-regulate, and develop self-efficacy and agency."  ERO School Evaluation Indicators Domain 4

Agency is having the power or capacity to act and make choices.  In a learner-centred environment, learners have agency over their learning.
